| What is a Sleep Study? |
| A sleep study, or polysomnogram,
is a recording of various physiological events that
occur while you sleep. The study is performed in
a comfortable, private room with a full-size bed,
telephone, color television, and VCR. The study
is a completely non-invasive, painless procedure
that requires the monitoring of verious parameters
to determine if you have a sleep disorder. |

| What Happens When I Check In? |
| When you arrive at the Sleep
Disorders Center, you will be escorted to your room.
you will be given time to relax and change.
When you are ready, your assigned
technologist will set you up for your study,a
process that takes about 45 minutes. Your technologist
will apply a number of electrodes and sensors
to the aurface of your skin. These devices will
measure your brain waves to determine what stage
of sleep you are in, your breathing effort, snoring,
EKG (heart rate), muscle tone in your chin, eye
movements, leg movements, and oxygen level in
your blood. If needed, the sensors and electrodes
can be disconnected from their source, enabling
patients to use the bathroom during the night.
You are then free to watch TV, read
a book, or other activities. Our technologist
will come by to turn off your light as close to
your normal bedtime as possible, allowing for
at least six hours of recorded time for your study.
Next Day The technologist takes off the machine
. You are free to have a shower and complimentary
breakfast in the comforts of a luxury hotel.
The results are available by the
evening and your appointment planned with our
Sleep Specialist.
